Pick #fragrancenotflowers This Mother’s Day

fragrance-direct-mothers-day-giftsMother’s Day is on the 11th of March this year and is fast approaching, so it’s definitely time to get thinking about the perfect gift! My Mum’s favourite flowers are white roses but I’ve bought them for her so many times it just doesn’t feel as special anymore. I think as you get older, presents are a good way to spoil people with the luxuries they probably wouldn’t buy for themselves, and I feel like perfume is one of those.

Flowers are beautiful, definitely! But a gorgeous bottle of perfume will last a lot longer and it’s something my Mum can enjoy for months to come, rather than just a few days. I also thought it would be cool to get her something completely different that isn’t her signature or day to day scent that feels a bit more special.

fragrance-direct-mothers-day-gifts My Mum’s favourite perfume is Chloe which is a powdery, floral scent that has hints of peony and lychee and springtime freesia.  To change things up though I went for Decadence by Marc Jacobs as it’s a rich perfume, perfect for dinner or drinks with girlfriends but completely different from her usual scent. It’s woody, with top notes of golden saffron and iris, a heart of rose and jasmine as well as amber, vetiver and papyrus making it very rich too. This is more of a special occasion, dressy scent that I think is good to have when you want to feel more glamourous. It also comes in a handbag shaped bottle that would look totally gorgeous on her bathroom shelf!

Fragrance Direct have so many amazing perfume’s though and their Mother’s Day gift edit makes it really easy to pick the right one. I’ve also written a blog post on picking the perfect scent here if you need some more advice! Whatever you do this Mother’s Day I hope you have a lovely time! Let me know what you’re getting your mum this year in the comments box, I would love to hear your perfume recommendations…

My New Year’s Resolutions 2018

I know that for a lot of people New Year’s resolutions are a pretty cringe and pointless thing to do. I so disagree though. In fact I think you should make resolutions on the regular. Having goals and thinking about what you what and where you want to go are so important and there’s no shame in making positive changes. So in order to practice what I preach, here are my New Year’s resolutions for 2018!

To be more impulsive – I’ve stressed out over everything this year but the thing about stressing is that it’s totally pointless. I’m behind everyone my age in probably every way. I don’t have a house, car, baby or career path and I’m not ‘settled down’ (that phrase makes me want to be sick) or particularly going anywhere. I know that sounds a bit negative but I actually think it’s pretty liberating. This is the year I want to let go of worrying about what other people think and just concentrate on being happy, enjoying things and listening to my gut feeling. There’s been so many times where I’ve missed out on things I’ve wanted to do and I think now is the time to stop holding myself back.

To travel more – Growing up I used to travel all the time and that’s something in the last few years that I’ve really started miss. Yes I went to Poland, Amsterdam and 5 cities in the UK last year but I think I’m yearning for a little more adventure now. Not having any money has definitely had a lot to do with it but maybe it’s time I start setting some holiday money aside. It’s the best thing for clearing your mind and giving you some fresh inspiration.

To watch more movies – While at university I really got into films, especially ones from the 50s and 60s and in particular everything by Alfred Hitchcock. I used to spend ages trolling through films and discovering new ones and this is something I want to pick up again in 2018. There is so much creative inspiration to be found in a good movie!

To blog more – I’m still struggling to juggle my blog and my 9-5 job and this is something that’s been a problem since day one. I really want to get more of a routine down and start treating it like a job with some time set aside each week. My blog is really important to me and has really helped to distract me when I feel like I’m getting bogged down with anxiety. This little project has brought me so many good things and I can’t wait to see what 2018 holds for Style Rarebit.

I would love to know your resolutions too, pop them in the comments below for me to read! I hope you all have an amazing year and that you aren’t feeling too worse for wear after last night too…

Cardiff Gin Festival

I felt like doing a write up on this was 100% necessary because honestly, who doesn’t love gin? I remember first getting into it because it’s pretty low calorie as far as alcohol goes but still not quite as vile as vodka. However after several messy nights and several more bottles I feel like I’ve become a little bit of connoisseur. Or at the very least, a little bit of an alcoholic. So, as you can imagine, getting invited to Cardiff gin festival was pretty exciting…

cardiff-gin-festival On the Friday me and my friend Hannah arrived at Portland House to start the festivities. When you first go in you get given a wristband, just like a music festival! This is the best idea ever as you can actually load up your wristband with money for the night, rather than paying in cash. This means you don’t have to faf about with change and there are barely any queues. You also get given your gin cup in a cross body bag which you recycle for every drink you get. They wash your cup for you and refill it properly every time you get a new drink and you also get to take it home! It’s honestly worth going just to get the cup and bag. I can’t think of anything more phenomenal than going about your daily business with a glass of gin strapped across your chest. Can you?

cardiff-gin-festivalOnce you have your cup and you’ve loaded up your wristband you can then hit the bars and start trying out some strange flavours. I initially went for a cucumber gin, playing it very safe but it was so refreshing and a good one to start with. I then decided to try a gin that was filtered through seaweed (I’m sorry I didn’t take down all the names!) this gin however I wouldn’t recommend. It was a triumph in flavouring but it literally tasted like I was drinking sushi. Lastly I picked up a rhubarb and custard cocktail which was super sweet and delicious and a good drink to finish on. I know three drinks doesn’t seem like a lot but the glasses are big and it’s a lot of liquid to drink. The staff at the bar are amazing too and gave us so many great recommendations and were really friendly and helpful.

cardiff-gin-festivalLastly, there’s a few things I wanted to mention which aren’t cons but something that I think you should be aware of before you go. One thing we didn’t realise was that you could have different mixers, I think they’re sat somewhere else on the bar but someone mentioned this to us afterwards and I felt like we missed out on trying some different flavours. Also, there aren’t many tables and it’s all standing so make sure you don’t take all your work stuff with you (like me) because you’ll have to carry it around with you the entire night.

cardiff-gin-festivalLater on in the evening they had a band playing and more people were getting up to dance. It was such a fun night and if you have a birthday or a special occasion coming up it’s a cool place to go and celebrate, try something new and it’s not too loud that you can’t talk either.

If you’d like to go to the next Cardiff Gin Festival or want to find one closer to you then click the link here to find out more.

My Halloween Costume 2017

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I hope you’re all enjoying my fave holiday and have your treats and pumpkins at the ready. I’m currently sat in the car on my way home from York which isn’t a super exciting way to celebrate but I did manage to get dressed up last weekend. Me and Rory decided to go as very traditional skeletons and it actually turned out way better than I thought! The makeup took about 3hours but it was so much fun and I didn’t destroy a single makeup brush or white towel in the process. Whatever you’re doing this eve I hope it’s suitably spooky and that you’re totally terrified! Catch up soon x

A night at Aaron Wise Apartments

cardiff fashion blogI encourage other people to start blogs all the time, in fact, if you’re reading this and don’t have a blog, you should really consider starting one. Never in a million years did I think writing from my bedroom would lead to the opportunities it has but last Tuesday, while sat in an Aaron Wise apartment, I could not have felt more grateful.

If you didn’t manage to catch my instagram story, me and my Mum spent the night at the newly opened Aaron Wise Serviced Apartments across the river from the Millennium Stadium. It was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments and it really felt like a trip away, even though we were ten minutes from home! The apartments are absolutely beautiful, modern and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a break in the city.

cardiff fashion blogThey have all the luxury feel of a high end hotel, prosecco on arrival, robes on the bed and a huge bathroom but with the privacy and comfort of your own space.  I’ve tried airbnb a few times because I prefer the apartment vibe but it can be hit-and-miss, whereas this is a guaranteed alternative that is far better.

The Aaron Wise Apartments are also right in the heart of the city, so if you’re here for the rugby, a concert or just a weekend away you don’t have to worry about taxi’s or directions. We went out to Wahaca for dinner which is on The Hayes and it was less than a 5 minute walk away. Aaron Wise have also created a Cardiff hotspot map which I’ve put below, so that you can see how close they are to all the main destinations.

The apartment we stayed in was a one bedroom but they have a two bedroom apartment for up to four people if you’re travelling in a group. Our apartment had a large kitchen too , with everything you need to make dinner at home as well as a coffee machine of dreams for the morning. The price of staying is also really reasonable for the location and the standard of the apartments, as well as the fact that you have privacy and lots of amenities. I couldn’t rate my stay here more highly, even though it was only one night I felt like an absolute princess and being able to walk to work in 5 minutes was amazing too.

If I win the lottery I might even move in…

I would like to thank Aaron Wise Apartments for the complimentary stay, it was amazing!

Bath, an Instagrammers wet dream.

I took handsome to Bath this weekend and I thought it might be nice to share some snaps on here. It’s one of my favourite places to go and funnily enough when I first started StyleRarebit I was there weekly for events. It’s just so beautiful, the architecture is so quirky and it has an old fashioned charm that you can’t quite trump anywhere else. To me it’s very quintessentially English in the nicest way, which coming from a Welsh person is a big deal. Also, the Lace in Fashion exhibition is on at the Museum which was the main reason for this trip. It was very much worth it, they have some incredible pieces, including a look from Raf Simmons’ first collection for Dior.

The Netflix Apartment

stylerarebit.comIt’s taken me the longest time to write this post, which is bizarre considering how amazing it is that I was actually invited. Getting an invite to a Netflix party is up there as one of the best invites I’ve had since starting Style Rarebit. I guess I wanted to wait a while though so that I could catch up on some of the new shows and let you know what I’ve been enjoying too.

This event was at the St.Davids Hotel which is gorgeous and the few times I’ve had dinner there it’s been amazing too. They fed us the nicest canopaes, macaroons and  champagne to keep us chatting and me and Zoe did our best job to taste test every single one. The night was all about sharing our favourite Netflix shows and discussing the things that we can’t wait to see more episodes of. We also got a sneak preview of some of the new ones that were coming out including 13 Reasons Why (which hadn’t been released yet) and my favourite Mind Hunter which is out later this year. You can watch the trailer here and if you like crime dramas you will love this. So lets talk about the things I’ve been watching.  I’ve managed to narrow it down to four shows which are all good for different reasons. The first being American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson. This real life crime was one of the most awful, bizarre and gripping cases in history and has been an amazing show to watch.  This show really told the story and had the most incredible performances from Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr. which will keep you watching for hours. The second is the Marvel series DareDevilI’ll be honest I didn’t think I would get into it but I’m currently on season 2 and loving it. I watched all of Jessica Jones (because Krysten Ritter is my absolute favourite) and this is equally dark and more gory taking out the cringe factor of it being a comic book hero show.

The third is Girlboss the adaption of the book by Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso. To be honest I watched half of the first episode and had to turn it off and it was only because all my friends loved it so much that I persevered. Trust me though it does actually pick up by episode 2/3 and you’ll start to fall in love with the self destructing, narsisitic and annoyingly cool Sophia before you know it. Lastly and this might not be for everyone but Schitt’s Creek is a new comedy offering from Eugene Levy. It’s about a rich family who loose everything and have to live in Shitt’s Creek, the only thing that wasn’t worth taking by the debt collectors. It’s silly, easy watching and it’s been entertaining me in the mornings for a week now. If you’ve watched any of these or have any good shows for me to start let me know, I’m always up for a good binge.

When am I going to make it?

I’ve decided that I want to start talking a little more frankly and openly about my life on Style Rarebit and express some of the ‘real’ things I’m thinking about right now. This particular vein of worry started about a week ago when I met a couple who are friends with my boyfriend. They were so lovely, they had recently got engaged, lived in a beautiful house and had two children. They were also two years younger than me. I think you can see where this is going. I am 25 and I cannot even get myself out of bed on time, let alone raise a family and afford a house. There are people my age who have their whole life together and honestly I haven’t a single plan past this Saturday. I am still eating tea at the family table, still getting told off for leaving cups in my room and still have not got my career together. Damn.

My boyfriend is becoming a police officer this summer and watching him get through every exam, interview and stage of the process has been so amazing. Don’t for a second misconstrue this as me not being unbelievably proud of him but it also makes me shit myself that little bit more. Everyone around me seems to be finding what they love to do and making it happen. Whether that’s in their career, or starting a family or just creatively making their passions happen everyday. Turning 25, as ridiculous as it sounds, was really daunting and thought provoking for me. I am a quarter of a century old and the fact of the matter is I still have absolutely no idea about what, or where or who I want to be in life.

I am currently working as a stylist/visual merchandiser and it’s honestly one of the most fun jobs I’ve ever had and with some of the most talented women I have ever met. I get to be creative every single day and am free to experiment as much as I like which has been amazing. That being said I’m a graduate in the lowest level job, there’s no progression and for all the hard team work we’re putting in it’s a minimum wage pay check at the end of the month. On this salary I am no further to buying a house than I am being able to stretch my money to reach 31 days. It’s not that I’m being negative but after all the internships, free photoshoots and blogging time I have put in, it’s a little frustrating to be getting nowhere in return.

This may be a bit ranty but my anxiety is at 100 wondering if I’ll ever have my own home. I would love to have a career I can be proud of, or just something to tell people I went to school with, when I bump into them at Tesco so I sound like I’m doing something good with my life. I’m not sure what my next step should be or what avenue is best at this point but I know for sure I am not the only one that feels like this. I guess that’s why I really wanted to write this post, outfits and hair stylers aside this is my online voice after all. Maybe by talking about this someone will comment with an idea or spark my interest in a new career and vice versa. I’m never going to give up but if I can speed up the process all the better for it.

What I got for Christmas 2016

So I’m still very much finding my feet with this whole YouTube thing but over the Christmas break I have binge watched so much, I really don’t understand why I’m not an expert yet haha. I was very, very lucky to get a surprise present from my mum, of a ring light and a microphone this Christmas. So I guess I really have no excuses now. I think it’s going to be a fun way of sharing more with you and I’m sure once I get used to talking to myself they will get a bit better! I’ve also got another one coming up about a few pieces I’ve picked up in the sales, so stay tuned for that and let me know what you think.

New Year’s Resolutions 2017

Here we are folks, it’s 2017!! I feel so excited for this year, I’m not sure why, I just have a feeling that it’s going to be a good one.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to achieve in these coming months and I think making resolutions is such a positive way to start. Why not set out to get what you want? and kick this coming year’s butt.

Resolution 1: Be more positive! Not gonna lie, I sometimes get a tad bit negative and it’s really not good for me, nor the people around me. This year I just want to focus on the good and be grateful for everything, the secret is real!

Resolution 2: Get strong I don’t feel at my best right now and I know that exercising is what my body really needs. I’m thinking of maybe signing up to a run or going to some classes to get me back on the right track. I always feel amazing after a workout and I got trainers for Christmas too, so no excuses!

Resolution 3: Grow StyleRarebit This blog is my favourite hobby ever but this year I want to push myself and grow it into something I can be really proud of. My main focus is creating better quality content and more of it. This is going to be my number one priority.

Resolution 4: Making Pyjamas I’ve been wanting to start a luxury pyjama line for about a year now and I’m still surrounded by toiles and fabrics. I’ll be starting small but I definitely want to have some pieces up online and be sewing more regularly by the end of this year.

Resolution 5: Do something out of the ordinary I really want to start doing a few things a year that are a bit more exciting and different. A zip wire is number one on my list but maybe trying some extreme sports or learning a new skill would be cool too.

I hope you liked these and that they inspired you to create your own. If you have any good ones please leave them in the comments below, I would love to hear what you have planned for 2017.

Happy New Year! x
