Must See Fashion Documentaries

Here lies a small, concise list of some of my favourite fashion documentaries for your viewing pleasure. DISCLAIMER – May induce excessive spending/ voguing.

ULTRASUEDE

halston

Halston is one of my all time favourite designers, so it’s really a no brainer for me to watch this one. The documentary is essentially a journey charting the evolution of American fashion. Long before Michael Kors, this focuses on the glamour of the 1970s in New York, think Andy Warhol and Studio 74 . He was renowned for his excess ($16,000 for orchids, absolutely!) and this film is a real escapism into that world.

BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK

bc

This man invented street style photography and if that isn’t reason enough to watch it then I really don’t what is. Taking pictures for his New York Times column, Bill Cunningham revolutionised the way we document fashion in print. This film is full of amazing characters and stories and a must watch for any fashion lover.

 SCATTER MY ASHES AT BERGDORFS

B

A shop addicts fantasy and a candid look at the luxury retail business. This includes interviews with some of the most high profile designers, buyers and celebrities and a great watch.

DIANA VREEELAND THE EYE MUST TRAVEL

dv

From a fashion history perspective, this is a woman who changed our ideas about beauty and fashion in print. With a life story fit for a blockbuster movie this half interview, half biography charts the phenomenal career of one of the most influential women in fashion of all time.

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

siFollowing the making of Vogue’s largest September issue, this is an access all areas documentary in the most influential fashion magazine in the world. It covers all aspects of the production, as well as interviews with Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington which make for interesting watching.
